23/2025 - Lucio Demare with Juan Carlos Miranda - Malena

One of the most unique and unmistakable sounds in Argentine tango has to be Lucio Demare with singer Juan Carlos Miranda in these recordings from 1942, many of which were Demare's compositions.

Welcome to the 40th tanda of Tanda of the Week!

While my original blog (2011-2016) got to 170 tandas, I am still happy with how far this new blog has gotten, I really like the Ghost platform and I am super thankful for the 200+ subscribers!

Right now there are several tandas/posts scheduled until the end of June and I'm working on preparing tandas for several months ahead.

Glad to have you with us and let's keep going!

The Lucio Demare & Juan Carlos Miranda discography

The Demare/Miranda discography has only 8 tangos recorded between 1938 and 1942.

  • Telón 1938-06-13
  • Din don 1938-07-12
  • Malena 1942-01-23
  • Al compas de un tango 1942-03-13
  • Mañana zarpa un barco 1942-07-20
  • No te apures, cara blanca 1942-10-09
  • Sorbos amargos 1942-11-10
  • Pa' mí es igual 1942-12-09

The first two are wonderful songs, but do not really mix with the others. This leaves us with just six songs to work with.

How the tanda was created

With such a limited selection of songs there's not much magical creativity involved in creating a great Demare/Miranda tanda. The magic really is in first of all playing a Demare/Miranda tanda, knowing when to play it, and of course the amazing songs themselves.

But my thought process here is to start and finish with either Malena or No te apures cara blanca. Both work great in both positions. Maybe the latter is even more suited for a final song of the tanda as it's rhythm, melody and delicate yet brutal melancholy demand musical attention and appreciation like no other song.
