34/2024 - Classic milongas from modern orchestras? Sexteto Cristal shows how!
Sexteto Cristal is a Hamburg (Germany) based sextet that has played live in several tango festivals and they have at least two albums available in digital format.
Driven by the passion and longing of tangueros for the timeless, danceable "classics," the sextet found its initial inspiration and guiding vision in the masterpieces of the past. I personally appreciate traditional arrangements and like when you can hear echoes of the original sounds from a variety of iconic orchestras. Their interpretations capture the intricate melodic phrasing, emotional intensity, and vibrant rhythms that defined tango’s golden age, transporting listeners to an era where this music reigned supreme.
While I rarely play modern orchestras in my DJ sets, I could easily imagine playing these classic milongas from a modern orchestra in a longer set when the time was right. The three songs are all very popular milongas and the orchestra and singer Guillermo Rozenthuler (ARG/UK) sound great!
Sexteto Cristal / Guillermo Rozenthuler - Flor de Montserrat (2018)
Sexteto Cristal / Guillermo Rozenthuler - Mi vieja linda (2018)
Sexteto Cristal / Guillermo Rozenthuler - La vida es una milonga (2019)
This week's cortina is from Finnish jazz sextet Dalindéo from their new album Tropicalia Nordica (2024).

Ok I played this last Thursday in a small local milonga in Helsinki and I think it went down well. The sound of a modern recording adds something to the evening and the songs were great to dance to. I'll give the tanda 4-stars! ;)
