33/2024 - Flor de lino and my favorite vals tanda of Miguel Caló / Raúl Iriarte

We are back from summer holidays! I hope everyone has had a beautiful summer with a lot of exceptional music to dance to. On that note, here's one of my new favorite vals tandas from Miguel Caló with singer Raúl Iriarte.

Bandoneonist and singer rehearsing

It starts strong with Flor de lino (1946), a beautiful composition by Héctor Stamponi, whose compositions also include Pedacito de cielo and Junto a tu corazón. Flor de lino was recorded also by Aníbal Troilo and Floreal Ruíz in 1947 and their great version is often played in milongas as well.

No te olvides de mí corazón (1945) was also recorded by Osvaldo Fresedo and Oscar Serpa, but to my knowledge Luna de Plata (1943), a composition of Osmar Maderna, was recorded only by Miguél Calo's orchestra. However there's a nice modern recording of it from Orquesta Típica Sans Souci from 2020. The song is the most uptempo of the three and has a nice little bandoneon solo and the extended ending note to finish a tanda nicely.

These beautiful valses have that post Golden age mid 40's melancholic vibe (similar to Demare valses) without compromising clear rhythm and captivating melodies.
