This week we continue with another release from the superb TangoSparks, a project dedicated to delivering the definitive sound of tango music to DJs, collectors, and devotees. There are several new releases in the TangoSparks store, but I'm still catching up and therefore we continue from one of the earliest ones, the 10 song collection with singer Alberto Morán.

TS 1.02 - Pugliese & Morán 1949-50

I have to admit my collection was missing a few of these songs and many were in quality that left much to be desired. So I'm very excited to upgrade my collection with the songs from the TangoSparks release.

I've yet to play these at a milonga with a good sound system, but just by listening on my home set and headphones I can hear a much clearer sound with more details than before.

The recordings are from a transitional time in studio recording and mastering techniques and apparently "Nearly half of Morán’s recordings from this period suffer from pitch drifting — maybe the most noticeable defect among many others — appearing consistently across both 78rpm and LP formats".

While the differences might not sound significant at first, the TangoSparks team has among other things, worked diligently to temper the peaks and distortion of Morán's vocals. The pitch corrections are very clear in several songs and they also give Morán's voice a nicer pitch, somewhat less frantic without taking away the intense emotional delivery.
