Welcome to this week's tanda!

And if you're new here, welcome to Tanda of the Week!

This week I'd like to share one of perhaps the most traditional classic tandas out there, but one that I sadly don't hear that often played in milongas. I'm of course talking about true traditional tango essentials - Ángel D'Agostino's orchestra with singer Ángel Vargas. Their discography of recordings between 1940-1946 is fortunately deep enough for several great tango tandas.

You could for example play something like this tango tanda:

13/2025 - Ángel D’Agostino with Ángel Vargas - Nostalgic Argentine Tango Tanda
I believe nobody captures that nostalgic style of tango better than Ángel D’Agostino with Ángel Vargas. This beautiful and calm, possibly early hours tanda sets the mood right from the first notes and has us strolling down Corrientes and Florida haunted by lost love.

And then later play this vals tanda!

My favorite vals tanda from the two Ángels!

And below I'll give you the tanda that for most of us has been the introduction to the two Ángels.

Ángel D'Agostino & Ángel Vargas - tango tanda

This nostalgic tango tanda could almost be played in any order. All the songs are some of the biggest classics from D'Agostino/Vargas. With this quality it's impossible to make a bad tanda. But you can always think of the best order to play the songs for your situation.

All the songs are of very similar tempo, but the dynamics have some differences. If you want a very smooth start, play Una pena as the first song. Something clearly more rhythmical? Play Adios arrabal. Or choosing Tres esquinas as the first song will never fail. Or you could even start with El yacaré like I did here.

  1. Ángel D'Agostino & Ángel Vargas - El Yacaré 1941-12-12
  2. Ángel D'Agostino & Ángel Vargas - Adiós, arrabal 1941-09-09
  3. Ángel D'Agostino & Ángel Vargas - Una pena 1941-11-05
  4. Ángel D'Agostino & Ángel Vargas - Tres esquinas 1941-07-24
